The NCEES FE Exam Reference Handbook will be the one and only book available for you as reference during the FE exam. Therefore, I recommend you get your own copy ahead of time, and get familiarized with it. The rapid preparation book will help you practice and get ready for the test -- it is worth every penny and you can resale it after you are finished with the exam.
The calculator is important, and I prefer one which has multi-line editing abilities so I can see the formulas I enter and verify they are correct before solving. These two options are excellent, and I used the TI-30XS Multiview when I took my test. The TI-36X Pro is a higher-end version and similar to the XS Multiview. You can use other calculators, but these are the only ones I recommend.
When you take the test, you will need to work problems in pencil and fill in the answers in pencil. I recommend this precision drafting pencil because it is of quality construction, feels precise in your hand, and is extremely comfortable. This is an engineer's pencil and looks very professional. I love mine and have had them for years. Staedtler has a variety of drafting pencils, including more fancy ones, but the one I have referenced here is a good, cost effective instrument that is comfortable and writes very well. The 0.7mm is a little thicker than 0.5mm and less likely to break but isn't so thick that you would dislike writing with it. 0.7mm is a good balance between thick and thin.
Lastly, you will need a good eraser that erases pencil marks cleanly and efficiently without tearing the paper. The erasers I recommend below are very good and are of excellent quality.
